520 PROBLEMS IN PROFESSIONAL ENGLISH WRITING SKILLS DEVELOPMENT FOR STUDENTS OF ENGINEERING SCIENCES

    Get PDF
Abstract. Modern engineering education involves the acquisition of competences that build up a basis for competitiveness of young professionals. These competences are normally divided into two major categories: professional and social. The latter group includes self-competence, co-operation and communication activities that serve as a means for interaction of professional knowledge and the target situation that this knowledge is meant to function in. The most fundamental form of social activities nowadays is a foreign language. The vast opportunity for communication in the ICT environment nowadays requires well-developed oral as well as written communication skills; therefore one of the major goals for the foreign language course for engineering students is to develop professional writing skills in order to comply with the target situation requirements. The problems of the current research are: a) to investigate the learning situation in the foreign language classroom within the population of engineering students of the Latvia University of Agriculture; b) find the proof of the necessity of their writing skills development; and c) discover the possibilities to improve these essential skills to the required level. Taking into account the insufficient number of classroom lessons devoted to the acquisition of the foreign language at the university, one of the ways would be to design a specific e-study course titled "English Language Writing for Engineering", which would cause a certain shift in accents in the existing foreign language programmes. Another way is to design an additional course that would be available as an optional one in the undergraduate study programmes or, otherwise, offered by the lifelong learning centre of the Latvia University of Agriculture. Keywords: professional English, English for Specific Purposes (ESP), English as a foreign language (EFL), students of engineering sciences, writing skills, communication activities. Introduction Language is one of the social competences, alongside with the self-competence and cooperation (after Habermas) that are to be acquired along with the professional ones to form a solid "package" of competences necessary for effective performance in the target situation. Foreign language nowadays plays an essential part in education, especially at its tertiary level, as the contemporary education is aimed at increasing student and young professional mobility within the European Union borders and beyond. It serves as a means of oral and written communication in everyday professional settings when a fresh graduate starts his career, plus acts as an efficient back-up tool during the study process. It assists in learning the content, thus linking various courses across the curriculum together and making the approach to learning more interdisciplinary. Last, but not least, in content-based courses of English for various engineering professions which are being taught at the Latvia University of Agriculture, the content-language approach to the study process facilitates critical literacy and reflexive learning

RESEARCH IN INFLUENCE OF ENGINE AIR FILTER REPLACEMENT PERIODICITY

Abstract. The study evaluates current periodicity of engine air filter replacement to determine the influence of this operation on some vehicle performance parameters. The experience of usage, costs of exploitation and technical condition of the vehicle are connected with a technically and economically based system of technical servicing. Periodicity of motor air filter replacement, declared by the automobile manufacturer Renault ranges from 30 000 km to 120 000 km, depending on the model and en gine type. According to the same recommendations, periodicity must be reduced by a half, if conditions of use include dusty roads and exploitation of the vehicle in urban conditions. The aim of the research is to evaluate the criteria, according to which actual replacement of motor air filters was performed and to measure the influence of air filters with different levels of use on the engine performance. To reach the goal, air filter cartridges from 100 vehicles of the same model and type, which were used in Latvia were collected. The influence of air filter clogging on several vehicle exploitation parameters, such as engine power and fuel consumption was analyzed. The value of maximum permissible pressure difference before and after the air filter was determined. Air filters, collected from vehicles, were tested on the test bench for the value of air pressure difference. The results obtained with all the samples have been presented and critically examined

Abstract. Modern information and communication technologies bring into the educational system the massive changes in the whole world. The expansion of computer techniques and new computer aided technologies gives very power tools for education enhancement to university teachers. The paper is focused on actual information and communication technologies implementation in E-learning educational process at the Faculty of Mechanical Engineering, University of Žilina, Department of Automation and Production Systems for the study branch -"Automation of Production Systems". The article presents applied aids, methods, course and educational software from the area of technological production preparation, gives the current information about solution of tasks specified for the field of CNC machines programming of the control system SINUMERIK 840D. Keywords: NC programming, Web, E-learning, Sinumerik 840D. Introduction The expansion of modern computer techniques, new computer aided technologies and mainly utilization of the Internet gives very powerful tools for information exchange and communication. The development of microelectronics, computer techniques and communication means directly has influenced mechanical engineering, too. Information and communication technologies (ICTs) are a "diverse set of tools and resources used to communicate, create, disseminate, store, and manage information, bring the massive changes into the educational system in the whole world". Knowledge is perceptive through the multiple senses and it enables to reach the higher educational efficiency in comparing with the traditional educational form. The most dominant form of computer aided communication is the World-Wide-Web (WWW), or simply the Web. The use of Web has been adopted into every aspect of educational life and each educational activity seems to be covered by a Web-enhanced teaching system. Well-designed Web based teaching tools can significantly enhance student learning, while decreasing the time spent in traditional classroom lectures. Web applications are popular due to the ubiquity of Web browsers, and the convenience of using a Web browser as a client. The ability to update and maintain Web applications without distributing and installing software on potentially thousands of client computers is a key reason for their popularity. Common Web applications include Webmail, online retail sales, online auctions and many other functions. Applications of computer communications can be used in many ways in education. One of the most quickly developed computer technique areas is computer graphic, multimedia, professional visualization, animation etc. The computer support of visualisation allows a new view on education. These computer support programs have becoming very significant elements of the education process. The target of their utilization is not only to teach to work with computer but especially to offer a quantity of different types of information. Mainly specialized study subjects from the engineering area required the different approach to the information presentation. Application of support programs and implementation of interactivity principles into E-learning courses promoted the student creativity. E-learning applications and processes include Web-based learning, computer-based learning, virtual classroom opportunities and digital collaboration. The content is delivered via the Internet, intranet/extranet, audio or video tape, satellite TV, and CD-ROM. It can be self-paced or instructor-led and includes media in the form of a text, image, animation, streaming video and audi

Abstract. The purpose of the work -to find out the features of throttle adjustment of the speed of movement of the piston of the hydraulic system of big capacity. The experimental research has been carried out with the above described device. In the hydraulic cylinder design changes have been executed, the sizes and throttle place by means of the theoretical throttle characteristic A DR = f(h) are changed. For reduction of the turn time of the working platform it was necessary to increase pressure in the hydraulic systems from 60 to 70 bar. Pressure increase has allowed the piston to increase the speed of movement. The time of turn of the working platform has decreased till 1.31 seconds. The piston pressure in the braking chamber is equal in the last phase of work to 48 bar, it tells about prevention of blowing the piston about the hydraulic cylinder
